Speaker Biographies:

 

 Keynote Speaker

Lynn Dare is a PhD candidate in applied educational psychology at Western University. Lynn’s primary area of research is acceleration for bright children, and she’s also interested in twice-exceptionally and including children in research. Her master’s research on acceleration through concurrent enrollment was awarded the Dunlop Award for Distinguished Graduate Contribution by the Canadian Association for Educational Psychology. Lynn recently spent four months at the Gifted Education Research, Resource, and Information Centre (GERRIC) at the University of New South Wales. Through her visit to GERRIC, she learned more about accelerative options, and led research on acceleration in Australia.

 

Leonila Liko is the Gifted ACL (Curriculum Leader) at Toronto’s Northern Secondary School where the gifted program (over 600 students) is the largest in Ontario.

 

Dr Shari Orders, University of Ottawa, has conducted research on parents’ involvement in advocating for gifted students in the Ontario education system as well as coaching educators on developing a global perspective to differentiating for gifted learners in the “regular” classroom.

 

 

Zoe Branigan-Pipe is a Special Assignment Teacher for Gifted itinerant programming in the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board with expertise in 21st Century Literacies and a holistic approach to meeting the needs of gifted students. “As learners ourselves, we need to leverage the power of technology to extend the scope of our influence beyond the confines of our communities, homes, schools and district. With a global perspective, we can begin to truely understand the world around us, recognize social justice and know when to stand up for ourselves and others.”

 

 

Ontario's New Special Needs Strategy - 2014

The government of Ontario launched a new strategy to meet the needs of families with special needs. It is a strategy that incorporates four Ministries : Ministry of Children and Youth Services, Ministry of Education, Health and Long Term Care and Community and Social Services.

ABC Ontario submitted a response to the Special Needs Strategy highlighting twice-exceptional needs of some students in the Gifted population and the needed focus on  mental health issues that gifted students may face.
