There is never enough time in the day. If I only have time to read just one book about gifted children which one should it be? (ABC Ontario volunteers well appreciate lack of time!) Being Smart about Gifted Learners by Fosters and Matthews is an excellent book that we often recommend. It provides a thoughtful overview of many issues relating to educating and parenting high ability learners. Re-forming Gifted Education by Karen Rogers offers a more thorough focus on finding the best educational strategies to meet a particular childs needs. The American organization, National Association for Gifted children, has published a book called Best Practises in Gifted Education; it also gives a broad overview of the educational strategies that research indicates are most effective. It is an excellent resource for educators and also parents who are particularly interested in that subject. If you are most interested in your role as a parent and supporting your child's social and emotional needs while making the most of their education then we would recommend highly any of Jim Delisle's books -- such as When Gifted Kids Don't Have all the Answers or Parenting Gifted Kids: Tips for Raising Happy and Successful Gifted Children . Perhaps the best time saver of all would be to get The Gifted Kids Survival Guide by Delisle and Galbraith; while it is written for your child to read, exploring it together will also quickly give you insight into issues from your child's perspective. (NB: I wouldn't hesitate to get the "Teen Handbook" version even if your child is younger and just read the relevant parts now and the other chapters later.)
