ABC Parent Discussion Group - Fall 2013
ABC Ottawa is offering another series of parent discussion groups this Fall. The groups will be facilitated by two long time ABC Ottawa members and volunteers, Carol Ryan and Shari Orders. They have come up with a framework for the discussions, and we are sure parents will appreciate their professional and personal perspectives on giftedness.
Three Wednesday night meetings are planned: September 25, October 30, and November 27, from 7:30 – 9 pm.
The groups will meet in Orleans Wood Room at the Bob MacQuarrie Recreation Complex – Orleans
1490 Youville Dr, Ottawa, ON K1C 2X8 (Take Jeanne D’Arc Blvd. South off the East bound Queensway/174).
Parents may attend single or multiple sessions. Please RSVP to email@example.com with the dates you would like to attend.
September 25 – Navigating the gifted identification and school placement process
Topics to be explored: What does the term “gifted” mean, anyway? Deciding to have your child assessed for giftedness. Pros and cons of school vs. private assessment. Making sense of the assessment report. What happens next?
October 30 – Supporting gifted adolescents and young adults
Topics to be explored: Underachievement, perfectionism and risk taking in gifted teenagers . Social and emotional impacts of the “gifted” label in middle and high school students. Transitional planning (middle to high school, high school to post secondary).
November 27 – The “gifted parent” experience
Topics to be explored: How has giftedness affected your relationships? (i.e., with partner/ex partner, other children in the family, parents, extended family, friends, colleagues, school staff). What difficulties have you encountered and how did you deal with them? What do you want others to know and understand about giftedness?
