Waterloo Region DSB The WRDSB offers a range of placements to learners demonstrating needs associated with intellectual giftedness. Possible elementary interventions include: Regular classroom with extensions and differentiation, group workshops, half-year one day per week pull out program ("area class") and congregated class placement. http://mcq.wrdsb.on.ca/ An WRDSB educator provided the following summary: "The range of programming for gifted students in the elementary panel within the WRDSB offers a continuum of service according to the demonstrated needs of the child. It recognizes that not all students accessing the program will require the same degree of intervention and affords flexibility and efficiency in the utilization of teaching resources. The service delivery model makes no presumptions about the degree of giftedness of the child but rather serves as a tool to bridge the gap between the needs of the child and the ability of the home school to meet them. Through a combination of consultation, instruction and evaluation, the gifted student’s needs are identified and serviced. Collaboration between the school, home, Enrichment staff and classroom teacher is essential if the least restrictive interventions can be offered to the child. Diagnostic assessment, program differentiation, I.E.P.’s , and I.P.R.C’s are introduced as they are required to determine and deliver program. The WRDSB attempts to offer a range of supports to students displaying a need for programming beyond that which can be provided totally within the regular class program. The foundation of most programming occurs in the form of extensions to the regular curriculum. Teachers are encouraged to differentiate the presentation of the curriculum to the extent that is possible and appropriate for those students demonstrating need in the class. In the case of Gifted learners, they are also encouraged to make the needs of these students known to the in-school enrichment contact. This enables the teacher to gain access to additional resources and expertise in order to plan and program for these students. This also makes it possible for these students to be considered for out-of-class/school opportunities that become available through one of 6.4 F.T.E. itinerant teachers of the gifted or in-school personnel."
