Introduction

ABC Ontario's mission is to increase the understanding and acceptance of bright and gifted children/youth at home, at school and in the community. One of our objectives is to be a resource to bright and gifted children, their families, and others. To that end, ABC Ontario is pleased to present ABC Ontario's Gifted Information Resource Guide: A Concise Overview of Gifted Education Programming in Ontario School Boards.

Background

For over 35 years, ABC Ontario has been answering the questions parents of bright and gifted children have regarding identification procedures used in different school boards and about the available program options.

Our own volunteers who represent parents at their local board's Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) or on provincial-level committees also seek basic information about school boards across Ontario.

As the primary organization in Ontario focused on the needs of gifted children, ABC Ontario frequently receives queries from journalists, researchers, and students of education.

The need for this Gifted Program Guide became apparent as we received frequent requests about different school boards and how they provide gifted programming. Our research did not reveal an authoritative, reliable source of this information, so we undertook to provide one.

Methodology

The ABC Executive Board developed a proposal in 2008 requesting a grant from Parents Reaching Out (PRO), an agency of the Ontario Ministry of Education. "Ontario's Parent Reaching Out grants are designed to encourage parents to become involved in their children's education and to support student learning at the school, regional, and provincial levels."

ABC Ontario's proposal was accepted and we were offered sufficient funding to recruit a management team from ABC members. The team developed a short survey, based on previous efforts to gather data from school boards. The survey questions were carefully selected in order to compile a snapshot of the boards. Some school boards preferred to not participate in the ABC Ontario survey at this time. We hope to build up complete profiles for every school board as we work on future updates.

Future Development

The Gifted Program Guide is intended to be a growing, changing resource. We hope to improve it in the future, adding such features as a keyword search facility and the ability for individual school boards to manage their own profile updates. Please let us know about any updates, errors, omissions, and typos so that we can make this the best resource guide of its type available to parents, educators, and researchers in Ontario. Submit comments to resource@abcontario.ca .
